Qualifications to Apply

Applicants must meet all of the following four criteria:

  1. Individuals who are foreign citizens.
    ❇︎Excluding those who have permanent residency in Japan.
    ❇︎Excluding those who have graduated from a Japanese high school (or secondary school).
  2. Individuals who either have or expect to obtain the residence status of "College Student" pursuant to the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act.
  3. Individuals who have completed or expect to complete 12 years of school education in a foreign country by March 31, 2024, or individuals who have been deemed by Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology to be equally qualified as such individuals.
  4. Individuals who meet criteria ① or ② below.
    ① Must have taken the Japanese portion of the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU)administered by the Japan Student Services Organization, and must have earned a total score of 50% or higher.
    ② Must have taken the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test Level N1 (which includes the former classification of Level 1)administered by Japan Educational Exchanges and Services, and must have earned a total score of 50% or higher, or must have passed the Level N2 test (formerly Level 2).

Selection Process

  • Admission decisions are based on a general evaluation of the applicant's submitted documents, a short essay written in Japanese (except Department of Calligraphic Culture), practical exam (Department of Calligraphic Culture only), and an interview.
  • The short essay must be 800 characters or less on an assigned topic. (The tools necessary for the practical exam in calligraphy will be provided by the University.)
  • The interview is an individual interview, and will last approximately 15 minutes.
